Prof. Amb. Judi Wakhungu EGH is Kenya’s Former Ambassador to France, Holy See, Portugal, Serbia and Monaco. From 2013 to 2018 she served as Kenya’s Minister (Cabinet Secretary) of Environment, Water & Natural Resources. Prof. Amb. Wakhungu’s Environment & Conservation legislation achievements, during her tenure as Minister, are globally unmatched. These include banning single use plastic bags in Kenya in 2017; leading the burning of Kenya’s ivory & rhino horn stockpiles in 2016 to curb illegal wildlife trade; enacting the Wildlife & Conservation Act 2013; Climate Change Act 2016; Water Act 2016; amending Environment Act 2015 & Forestry Act 2015; Leading the Waste Management Bill, and many other Environment & Conservation Regulations. Prof. Amb. Wakhungu is a recipient of many Awards including Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Reading in 2017, Oceans Award 2018, Clark R. Bavin Award 2016, Order of the Golden Heart EGH 1st Class 2014, and Distinguished Alumni Awards from Penn State University & St. Lawrence University. Prof. Amb. Wakhungu has held numerous international responsibilities including serving on the Scientific Advisory Board of the UN Secretary General, Energy Advisor to the World Bank, Vice-President of the United Nations Environment Assembly, Board of Trustees of the World Fish Centre, Lemelson Foundation Board, World Bioenergy Association Board, Co-Chair of the International Assessment of Agricultural Science & Technology for Development, International Fund for Animal Welfare Board, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy Board, Flipflopi Advisory Board, WWF International Board and many others. Prof. Amb. Wakhungu holds a PhD in Energy Resources Management from Penn State University, MSc Geology from Acadia University, Canada, and BSc Geology from St. Lawrence University, New York. As Kenya’s first pioneer woman in Geology, she has the distinction of mentoring many STEM students and professionals.
