Daniel Sopia is a distinguished leader in conservation, renowned for his collaborative work with local communities to safeguard Kenya’s diverse ecosystems. He brings to MMWCA a unique blend of leadership, inspiration, and a deep-seated passion for conservation, supported by extensive management experience in the conservation and tourism sectors. As a founding member of MMWCA, Daniel has played a pivotal role in its development. He initially served as the Chairperson of the Conservancies Council before joining the Secretariat as Chief Programs Officer and eventually becoming CEO. In 2020, he contributed to the Task Force on Human-Wildlife Conflict Compensation Schemes in Kenya and served on the Greater Mara Management Board from 2019 to 2024. In 2023, he was appointed to the Maasai Mara National Reserve (MMNR) Planning Implementation Committee (PIC) and the Greater Maasai Mara Ecosystem Plan (GMMEP) PIC. A Silver-rated Professional Tour Guide, Daniel transitioned from active tour guiding to establish the Olare Motorogi Community Conservancy Trust in Maasai Mara. He co-led Olare Motorogi Conservancy as a Director from 2006 to 2008, later serving as a Trustee and Community Development Manager in 2013. Additionally, he has held roles as a Board Member for Olare Motorogi Conservancy and Vice Chair of Olpurkel Company Limited, the conservancy’s management entity.
