Speaker Bio
Dr Graham McCulloch is a conservation practitioner who has spent the past 30 years in Botswana, conducting research and working in the environment and conservation sector. Armed with a Zoology Degree, Graham spent the first four years in Botswana working as a professional guide before conducting a PhD on the wetlands ecology of the Makgadikgadi salt pans. He then followed a career as an ecological consultant contributing to various community area and protected area management plans and biodiversity assessments and co-founded a community-owned game reserve outside the City of Francistown; called Tachila Nature Reserve in 2005. In 2012, Graham co-founded an NGO called the Ecoexist Project, a field-level human wildlife conflict intervention and community development project in the Okavango Delta. Ecoexist supports the lives and livelihoods of people living with the largest elephant population on the planet, promoting coexistence. Over the past ten years, the project has placed considerable resources and effort in supporting small enterprise development to increase benefits coming back to households living with elephants, and contributing to a more diverse and resilient wildlife economy in the Okavango. With a team of crafty innovators, Graham co-founded the Okavango Craft Brewery in 2019, a manufacturing hub that pays premium prices for local grains, harvested by small-scale ‘elephant aware’ farmers who coexist with elephants, to create a market for elephant aware produce and reward farmers for their efforts to coexist with elephants.
